Are Energy Drinks Safe – Compared to Caffeine?

A recent study comparing drinks with just caffeine versus drinks labeled as energy drinks was released. A high volume energy drink versus caffeine consumption study was released in the Journal of the American Heart Association. This study observed electrocardiogram and blood pressure effects from energy drinks versus just straight caffeinated drinks.

This was a double blind random controlled study. Eighteen young individuals that were healthy were picked. Those that participated consumed either thirty two ounces of caffeinated drink or energy drink.

Either drink included three hundred twenty miligrams of caffeine. These participants then went through a six day washout perioud. QT interval and systolic blood pressure were significantly higher in those that consumed energy drinks.

Choline and Weight Loss – by Eating Eggs & Meat Cause Disease?

A recent study performed and released in Circulation, shows that Choline which is common in chicken eggs and animal meat, may cause some diseases. This study was performed on vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores. Initially, researchers were trying to find why meat causes heart disease.

They found evidence that perhaps choline which is prevelant in eggs and animal meat, is a culprit. They claim that choline feeds a gut bacteria, that causes your blood to become sticky. This can potentially cause heart attacks and strokes.

A group of vegetarians, vegans, and omnivores were given a choline supplement for two months. Researchers noticed a ten times increase of trimethylamine N-oxide, which has been linked to creation of cardiovascular diseases.

“We showed that as plasma TMAO levels go up, platelet responsiveness also goes up. It happened in a dose-dependent fashion, and it didn’t matter if the vegans kept eating a vegan diet. If they had a high TMAO level, they weren’t protected. Their platelets were hyperresponsive. A platelet that is prone to aggregate like this is a risk for clotting.”

These results were published in an April twenty four two thousand seventeen issue of Circulation. What I find interesting is that even vegans whom consumed this albeit synthetic choline were not protected from possible diseases, even with there no meat no eggs nutrition.

Berkeley – Soda Tax Curbing Soda Sales

The city of Berkeley, California passed a one cent per ounce soda tax in two thousand fourteen. Soda, energy drinks, juice with added sugar, and syrups are charged one cent per fluid ounce. Of course this government bureaucracy keeps those tax proceeds.

Berkeley claims that this is not a tax on consumers. Distribution companies are required to pay this tax each month. A University of North Carolina study claims that soda sales have dropped significantly in Berkeley, California.

Bottled water sales increased. Sales of sugar based drinks dropped 9.6 percent. Bottled water sales increased 15.6 percent. Beverage sales that were not taxed increased by 3.5 percent.

Not all distribution companies and retailers may have passed on this increased tax to their customers. A twelve ounce of soda would have increased twelve cents. Aloholic drinks and others with no significant amount of sugar, did not receive this additional tax.

Burger King – New ad Whopper Flop

As a raw food vegan, I never eat fast food. There are too many reasons to count in this blog post about why I no longer eat fast food. However, Burger King’s most recent advertisement was a whopper of a flop.

This fast food giant released an advertisement titled “OK, Google”. This advertisement was supposed to trigger potential customers to use Google’s voice actived smart speaker system. If you ask google what is a whopper, it is supposed to tell you the first line of a wikipedia page for Burger King’s whopper.

However, after the release of this nationwide advertisement campaign, this feature stopped working. Burger King confirmed that this google speech recognition no longer works. You have to say Whopper Burger in order for this to work.

Not only did this advertisement malfunction. This advertisement backfired in a different way. Once this advertisement began running nationally, Internet users began editing Burger Kings’ whopper wikipedia page.

“Cancer causing” and ingredients to include “cyanide” was included in the Whopper wikipedia page. However, individuals at Burger King do not plan on pulling this advertisement.

Benzoic acid and other additives when mixed with Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, could cause a health hazard. The African National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control wants Nigerian Bottling Company to put warning labels on all Fanta and Sprite products. This warning label is to include a warning of mixing this soda with vitamin C.

Tests of this product in the United Kingdom revealed this potential dangerous cocktail. Africa’s Food and Drug administration is encouraged to periodically test this product for safety. Sunset yellow and benzoic acid are known to become carcinogenic.
